3 1960 The U-2 IncidentElection of 1960 On May 1, 1960 a US spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. This incident revealed that the US was spying on the Soviet Union. Damaged the relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States. Republican Richard Nixon ran against Democrat John F. Kennedy. Debates between the two candidates were televised. Kennedy looked better on TV than Nixon. Many believe Kennedy’s TV appearance helped him win the election.

4 President Kennedy and the Cold War Bay of Pigs Invasion April 1961 CIA supported a Cuban led rebellion against communist leader Fidel Castro. The rebels were defeated and Cuba strengthened their ties with the Soviet Union.

5 The Cuban Missile Crisis October 1962 Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba aimed at the US. Standoff lasted for 13 days until Soviet Union removed the missiles This was the closest the US came to nuclear war.

7 US Space Program In October 1957, the Soviet Union launched a satellite known as Sputnik into space. US responded with creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958 President Kennedy announced a national goal to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. 8 Assassination of President Kennedy November 22, 1963 President Kennedy was shot and killed. Lee Harvey Oswald was the gunman Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson took over as President of the United States

9 Let’s Review The US continued to have issues with the Soviet Union such as the U-2 Incident and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The US tried to competed with the Soviet Union in the US Space Program. Communists won in the Bay of Pigs and the building of the Berlin Wall. The US competed with the Soviet Union with the building of the US Space Program. President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 and Vice President Johnson became president.
