THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
BALANCE EMPHASIS RHYTHM PROPORTION/SCALE UNITY/HARMONY
2
Proportion Proportion is the size relationship between parts of a design; each unit needs to be in scale with other units around it. There is nothing more important to the success of a house and its furnishings than the correct use of scale and proportion. We perceive an object in relation to the area around it. Objects that are too large will crowd a small room and make it appear smaller, while furniture that is too small will seem even smaller in an oversized room. Also, a large piece of furniture, when surrounded by small-scaled furniture, will appear larger than when surrounded by large-scaled pieces. A small table with spindly legs placed at the end of a heavy sofa or chair will look out of place, while a large-scaled table placed near a dainty chair will not be pleasing.

BALANCE Balance is grouping of shapes and colors around a center so there is equal attraction on each side of the center. Visual equilibrium in a room is called balance. Balance can create a feeling of equalness that makes surroundings restful and looking as if they belong where they are.
7
BALANCE With FORMAL /SYMMETRICAL balance, equal objects are placed an equal distance from the center.

9
BALANCE INFORMAL/ASYMMETRICAL means unequal objects are placed unequal distances from the center in such a way that a feeling of balance is achieved.

EMPHASIS Emphasis means that you have a center of interest in your design or a focal point. A center of interest is an area that calls attention to itself by size or contrast in brightness or light and dark; for example: one bright wall, a grouping of furniture or a dark chest against a light wall. There should be one focal point of interest, and the remainder of the design complementing it.
