THE INDEFINITE ARTICLE a – is used before a word begining with a consonant, or a vowel with a consonant sound: a man, a hat, a university an – is used before a word begining with a vowel, or a consonant with a vowel sound: an apple, an uncle, an hour THE DEFINITE ARTICLE the [ð ә ] – is used before a word begining with a consonant, or a vowel with a consonant sound: the boy, the sky, the USA the [ði] - is used before a word begining with a vowel, or a consonant with a vowel sound: the arm, the earth
