Solving Equations

The purpose of this tutorial is to help you solve equations. As you move through the tutorial the examples will become more complex.

Rules to remember: 1.Bring variables (letters) to the left of the equal sign and bring numbers to the right of the equal sign.  Letters Numbers 

2. To move a variable or a number from one side of the equals to the other do the opposite math operation. The opposite of addition is subtraction The opposite of subtraction is addition The opposite of multiplication is division

Are you ready? Good luck

Example #1 2x + 4 = 16 The four is being added so we should SUBTRACTthe 4 from both sides - 4 - 4 _______________________ 2x = 12 Now we have variables on the left and numbers on the right The last step would be to get the “x” by itself. Remember, the 2 up against the “x” means that they are being multiplied. So, we should DIVIDE both sides by 2 _____ ____ 2 2 x = 6 This gives you the answer

Example #2 5x - 6 = 24 The six is being subtracted so we should ADDthe 6 on both sides +6 +6 _______________________ 5x = 30 Now we have variables on the left and numbers on the right The last step would be to get the “x” by itself. Remember, the 5 up against the “x” means that they are being multiplied. So, we should DIVIDE both sides by 5 ____ ____ 5 5 x = 6 This gives you the answer

Our next example is a little more challenging. It has variables and numbers on both sides.

Example #3 9x + 3 = 4x + 23 The 4x is positive so we should SUBTRACTthe 4x from both sides - 4x - 4x ______________________________ 5x + 3 = 23 Drop the 5x and the 3 down along with the 23 DIVIDE both sides by 5 - 3 - 3 x = 4 This gives you the answer ___________________ SUBTRACT 3 from both sides 5x = 20 ____ 5

EXAMPLES Do the following examples: Work out the problems and then check your answers. The answers will be on the next slide.

12x + 7 = 31

X = 2

6x – 3 = 4x + 15

X = 9

1.- 4 x + 5 = 2 x – 1 3 -4x + 5 = 2x – 13

X = 3

Hopefully you were successful. See your teacher if you need additional examples. This ends this tutorial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
