A New Tool In today's UK society there is a need to be more specific in the work we do with families around their cultural needs With refugee’s and asylum seekers requiring services for children this is an important tool in developing culturally sensitive working Service users should be acknowledged as the experts in their own lives

Using a Culturagram This is a tool specifically to be used where there is a need to focus on understanding cultural issues It enables discussion on areas that can be very sensitive It can be used in conjunction with other assessment tools I.A’s C.A’s, CP

Ten Factors to consider Reason for immigration Length of time in the community Legal or undocumented status Age at time of immigration Language spoken at home and in the community

Ten Factors Contact with cultural institutions Health beliefs Holidays and special events The impact of crisis and significant events Values held about family, education and work

In groups of 4 two pair work together initially Consider the ten factors set out and draw up your own Culturagram 10 minutes each way Use the factors flexibly ~you may not have moved countries but maybe towns or cities Health beliefs maybe about family patterns of health or maybe behaviour Feedback on key points and issues raised using this type of tool to the larger group of 4 Whole group feedback

Key points Constructing a culturagram requires skilled communication Clear explanations about why a tool of this nature will be useful to the service user Use great sensitivity as this could raise painful and distressing memories Be prepared about how you will respond
