Science Feb. 17 th (a day) Feb. 18 th (b day) SIT IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT… 1.Review your notes on Soil…you will receive your test immediately after the bell rings! 2. Make sure you have a pencil and your notebook….notebooks will checked today! 3. Turn in homework – Ed Helper Facts about Soil into the correct basket now
2
Quick Review on Soil…. How much of the Earth’s crust contains useable soil? 3.125% Soil is a mixture of what? What makes up the biggest percentage? Sediments, water, air, humus, fungi and bacteria (decomposers), minerals What type of soil has the largest particles allowing water to flow through the fastest? Sandy soil What are the names of the 3 horizons? What layer is most fertile? A, B, C (A is the most fertile) What is humus? The decayed organic matter from once living plants and animals How would you describe the soil in Horizon B in Charlotte? Red, sticky clay
3
Test on Soil….6.E.2.3 Clear off your desks except for a pencil….. I will collect all notebooks now to check and review…. I will pass out folders; please sit them up your desk now….… When you have completed the test, put everything inside the folder and read, draw or sit quietly You will have 20 minutes to complete the test!
4
WARM UP “A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt Write about what this quote means to you? (hint: think about what you learned about soil and its importance)
5
Volunteers….

6.E.2.4 Standard Standard 6.E.2.4 Conclude that the good health of humans requires; monitoring the lithosphere, maintaining soil quality and stewardship. Where is this standard in our classroom?
9
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Steward (definition): to manage, monitor, or look after something
10
Think about an airplane…. The stewardess (female) or steward (male) on an airplane takes care of passengers’ needs while on the airplane
11
Think about this.. For plants, animals, and humans to have good health, we must take care of the soil, air, and water on Earth We must be Stewards of the Earth!
12
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Nonrenewable resources: resources (coal, oil, natural gas) that are used and never replaced Renewable resources: resources that are reformed naturally over periods of time
13
Think about this…. Soil is a renewable resource but it takes hundreds of thousands of years to replace
14
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Pedosphere: The zone where soils are found and where new soils are being formed
15
Think about this…. We must be “Stewards of the Pedosphere” for future generations
16
Video – Taking Care of Earth’s Soil – “A Steward of the Soil” https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Dor4XvjA8Wo
17
Pedosphere Diagram Find the next available page… Make a circle in the middle of your paper Write in center: Pedosphere Now draw lines out from the circle as shown in the example
18
Pedosphere Diagram In each square, write…. The Atmosphere (air surrounding the Earth) The Biosphere (where living organisms live) The Lithosphere ( crust and upper portion of the mantle) The Hydrosphere (Earth’s water)
19
Do Now…. ADD PICTURES TO EACH SQUARE OF YOUR PEDOSPHERE DIAGRAM
20
Write in notebook Humans have impacted the Pedosphere by removing or disturbing the Earth’s natural vegetative cover (trees, grasses, plants) This includes: 1. The Dust Bowl2. Deforestation 3. Overgrazing 4. Industrialization 5. Farming 6. Soil as a vector
21
Case Study: The Dust Bowl… Listen to this in our nation’s history….. Dirty Thirties (1930’s) a period of severe drought and dust storms Farmers plowed deeply; removed native prairie grasses Native grasses held the soil and water during droughts (dry periods with no rain) Severe drought struck in the 1930s; high winds created massive dust storms
22
The Great Plains…
23
The Dust Bowl…
24
A Look at the Dust Bowl… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= o7Uwg8BT6qQ Lessons Learned from the Dust Bowl
25
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Deforestation: Trees cut down leaving soil left exposed (easily eroded or blown away)
26
Video – Deforestation Write down 2 facts you hear from the video on deforestation https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=M4jhjt1_eyM
27
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Overgrazing: W hen plants are eaten by animals without time for plants to re-grow.
28
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Industrialization: A country / society changing from an agricultural (farming) society to a manufacturing and industry based society
29
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Agricultural Activities R educes soil fertility (vitamins and nutrients) and native vegetation, increases erosion
30
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Soil as a vector Soils fertilized with human and animal waste which can transmit disease and infect crops (people can get sick)
