1 2 SAMUEL Chapter 01 THE HEART OF A KING I. INTRODUCTION A. Tonight – 2 Samuel. 1. 1st and 2nd Samuel were originally one book.

2 2. 150 B.C., Septuagint put all 4 books together.
3. Later renamed as 1st, 2nd Samuel. B. Samuel wrote most of 1st Samuel. 1. 1Chronicles 29:29

3 a) 1st Samuel ends with end of Saul’s reign!
II. 2SAMUEL 1:1-10 A. This Amalekite’s story is a bit “fishy”. 1. First – he come into David’s camp in mourning.

4 2. Second - to tell David he killed Saul a bit foolish!
3. Third –as Saul requested – he killed him. a) Albert Barnes says: 4. Fourth – he expects some kind of reward. a) He expects David to be the next king.

5 B. Did this Amalekite kill king Saul or not?
1. 1Samuel 31:3-6 a) This young man is both a liar and a thief! III. 2SAMUEL 1:11-16

6 A. Taking Saul’s life punishable by death.
1. This man’s lie cost him his own life. 2. The Lord asked Saul – to leave no Amalekite alive. a) 1Samuel 15:3 b) For this disobedience he forfeited his kingdom!

7 (1) An Amalekite took credit for killing him!
IV. 2SAMUEL 1:17-18 A. Joshua 10:13 1.“Book of righteousness” according to Keil and Delitzsch.

8 2. It has long since been lost.
a) Where this “Song of the Bow” comes from. V. 2SAMUEL 1:19-27 A. John Gill interprets David’s statement:

9 1. Bond of friendship greater than he had ever experienced.
a) Jonathan saved David’s life! b) No easy task on any level! (1) David grieved at this loss.

10 VI. CONCLUSION A. How would you feel when you heard Saul was dead? 1. Look at the way David handled it. a) Says nothing but good about Saul!

11 b) He praises him. c) He expresses love and appreciation for Jonathan. d) 2Samuel 1:20 (1) This is the heart of a man after God’s own heart!
