PAT - Research project - General What is a PAT? Is a SINGLE task Is a research project Is about IL (Information literacy) and not IT (Information technology) Is a series of smaller activities Is scaffolded learning Is based on Big 6 Information Management model Is influenced by ideas of Jamie McKenzie
3
PAT - Research project - General A PAT is the … application/use of knowledge, skills and values counts 25% of the total promotion mark done over 2/3 terms or as one extended task is direct and systematic observation of applied competencies.
4
PAT - Research project - General Assessment for Grade 12 LO1 Operational knowledge Externally assessed LO2Use of applicationsExternally assessed LO3 Information management Externally set Internally assessed Externally moderated
5
PAT - Research project - General Gr 12 Must use 4 application packages of an office suite … –for planning –gathering information/data –processing information/data –extracting information –presenting information –making recommendations, etc. in solving the problem. Must use integration between the 4 packages … –to help solve the problem –to communicate a solution to the problem. Must produce a … –comprehensive report of the solution to the problem –summary of the solution to the problem.
6
PAT - Research project - General Gr 12 must produce report which … shows examples / evidence that will explain the problem / demonstrates what the current state of affairs is indicates / shows / explains / describes why it is a problem or could become a problem and demonstrates / explains how the problem could possibly be addressed / solved focuses on solutions that could benefit local community.
7
PAT - Research project - General Topic For this series of PowerPoints the problem is –How can we effectively use the printer in the Computer Applications Technology classroom
8
PAT - Research project - General Requirements of the task 1.Provide a broad description of the task that you need to complete in your own words 2.Write down questions that you will ask to determine the type of information that you will 3.Search, locate, access, extract, use and manipulate / process information / data 4.Complete the task/solve the problem 5.Present your idea/plan/recommendation/conclusion/solution for the problem 6.Demonstrate the appropriate use of the application programs
9
PAT - Research project - General How should it be done 1.Select topic 2.Analyse the problem – see what information is needed to solve the problem – ask questions 3.Plan where and how information will be found 4.Find the data/information 5.Indicate where and how the information will be used to add to / assist in finding solution 6.Process the data into information 7.Decide what needs to be done to solve problem 8.Plan the final solution / report / check that all the questions have been answered 9.Compile / design report to present recommendation 10.Communicate solution 11.Error check final document
10
PAT - Research project - General Need Office suite Access to the Internet Electronic reference sources Material/people that will assist in finding data/information
11
PAT - Research project - General Assessment Done in phases all leading to final report Deadline given for each phase Each phase assessed as completed Why in phases? – think – from a teacher’s perspective, from a learner’s perspective
12
PAT - Research project - General Marks for each section PhaseTaskMarks% 1 Task 1: Task definition and Information finding strategies 4223 2 Task 1: Access information and determine relevance 4223 Task 2: Use information - Planning 3 Task 1: Use information – Processing/analysing 9654 Task 2: Use information - Final presentation/synthesis 180100
13
PAT - Research project - General Managing Suit your own needs One or two periods per week Continuous period Continuous periods spread over 2/3 terms
14
PAT - Research project - General After marking each phase learner must … Revise steps taken so far Look at steps to complete Reflect on what can be done in the next phase to improve assessment marks.
