China Most Chinese cities were being influenced by one or more European countries – John Hay’s Open Door notes argued that everything should be done to keep Chinese trade open to the U.S. In 1900, U.S. and European troops stopped the Chinese “Boxer Rebellion” (who protested European influence)

Wilson and Mexico Wilson only supported countries with democratic election – He supported the elected Mexican leaders in 1915 Wilson had troops (led by John J. Pershing) to hunt down the Mexican rebel leader Pancho Villa This event set a standard for sending troops into other countries to solve problems
