Sports: Baseball is by far the most popular sport in the Dominican Republic. In boxing, the country has produced scores of world-class fighters and several world champions. Basketball also enjoys a relatively high level of popularity.

History: Christopher Columbus arrived on Hispaniola on December 5, 1492, during the first of his four voyages to America. He claimed the island for Spain and named it La Española. In 1496 Bartholomew Columbus Christopher's brother, built the city of Santo Domingo, Europe's first permanent settlement in the "New World". The Spaniards created a plantation economy on the island. The colony was the springboard for the further Spanish conquest of America and for decades the headquarters of Spanish power in the hemisphere.

Famous People / Role Models: Oscar de la Renta Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic but, at present he is an American citizen. A leading fashion designer, Oscar has won many awards which includes CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2000. Alex Rodriguez Nicknamed as A-Rod, he is a professional baseball player. Considered as one of the best baseball players of all time, A-Rod plays for New York Yankees, of Major League Baseball. He holds the record of hitting 500 home runs at the youngest age. In 2007, Rodriguez and Yankees signed a 10 years contract for $275 million, which is the richest contract in baseball history.
