University of Nebraska–Lincoln Know how. Know now. Preparation for Painting Furniture  Check for repair  Check for lead paint (before 1978)  Clean (water and dish soap)  Fill holes with wood putty  Sand (if not painted with lead paint)  Remove sawdust with rags and then tack cloth  Paint with sealer/gripper (if furniture has lead paint)

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Know how. Know now. Make a design  Make a plan  Draw it on paper  Check with instructor to OK plan

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Know how. Know now. Apply Base Coat  Brush along the grain of the wood  Less paint is better  It will take two layer of paint to cover  Lighter colors will take more layers  Use hair dryer or fans to dry fast  Has to be completely dry-if painting again when wet, it will pull off first coat of paint  If painting stripes paint cream stripe first, then red

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Know how. Know now. Apply the Design  Best to put tape on painted area that has dried for a day  Can’t wait a day in workshop so dry to touch and don’t press tape down hard.  May need a blade to cut along the tape if tape is pulling up paint  Use paint tape only

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Know how. Know now. Apply the Stain  Stain is applied for looks and to cover up uneven lines  Stain should only be applied when all paint is dry  For oil base stain - Use cotton cloth or foam brush to apply. May need to let stand 10 minutes. Then with a cotton cloth lightly wipe off leaving some stain  For water base stain – Use cotton cloth to apply and wipe off at the same time. Don’t let stand

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Know how. Know now. Apply Finish Coat  Use regular brush to put on the polyurethane  Dip brush in polyurethane and swipe off excess polyurethane before starting to paint  Go with the grain  Need two or three coats  Sand with fine sandpaper between coats, if surface needs to be smooth
