Preparation for Painting Furniture Check for repair Check for lead paint (before 1978) Clean (water and dish soap) Fill holes with wood putty Sand (if not painted with lead paint) Remove sawdust with rags and then tack cloth Paint with sealer/gripper (if furniture has lead paint)

Apply Base Coat Brush along the grain of the wood Less paint is better It will take two layer of paint to cover Lighter colors will take more layers Use hair dryer or fans to dry fast Has to be completely dry-if painting again when wet, it will pull off first coat of paint If painting stripes paint cream stripe first, then red

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Know how. Know now. Apply the Design Best to put tape on painted area that has dried for a day Can’t wait a day in workshop so dry to touch and don’t press tape down hard. May need a blade to cut along the tape if tape is pulling up paint Use paint tape only

Apply the Stain Stain is applied for looks and to cover up uneven lines Stain should only be applied when all paint is dry For oil base stain - Use cotton cloth or foam brush to apply. May need to let stand 10 minutes. Then with a cotton cloth lightly wipe off leaving some stain For water base stain – Use cotton cloth to apply and wipe off at the same time. Don’t let stand

Apply Finish Coat Use regular brush to put on the polyurethane Dip brush in polyurethane and swipe off excess polyurethane before starting to paint Go with the grain Need two or three coats Sand with fine sandpaper between coats, if surface needs to be smooth
