1 A Cross-Divisional Center of the Engineering Division and the Accelerator Technologies and Applied Physics Division Mission statement: Serve as a Center of Expertise for Magnetic Systems Science and Engineering, through integration of design, fabrication and implementation of complex magnetic systems in support of the DOE Office of Science mission. BCMT will provide – -Coordination and Integration of space, resources, and development of new resources -Provide a coherent means of communication: with DOE, WFO and internally... and an environment for creating and nurturing new ideas The goal is an organization that leads the Office of Science in Magnetic Systems
3
Newly formed BCMT will Provide Many Opportunities Consolidate and share resources Integrate infrastructure o Test facilities o Diagnostics/instrumentation Develop tools and techniques to solve common problems o Mechanical analysis and modeling o Quench protection o Materials o Cryogenics Generate new applications o Injector magnets o Solenoids o HTS apps outside HEP (we really need these ) Current Year Portfolio Funding ~ $16M
4
Broad Areas of Strength in Magnet Technology (Our unfair competitive advantage) Magnetic systems: – Long, sustained, history of expertise in PM and resistive magnet systems – Strong analysis capabilities Superconducting accelerator magnets: – Long, sustained history of innovation in high-field magnets – Vertically integrated expertise in superconducting magnet technology (materials, analysis, design, fabrication, test) Magnet testing – Development of novel magnetic measurement systems – Development of novel diagnostics – Facilities for PM, EM, and SC magnet testing
