1 Lesson 1: Monday Multiplication Kristine Lynch MA.3.A.1.1

2 Times Tables Pre-test worksheet

3 Cookie Math! Repeated Addition The symbol x means multiplication.
Multiplication means to have many groups of the same size.

4 Example 1: There are five groups, and each group has two elephants. 5 × 2 = 10                                                                       How many groups How many in each group We can solve it by adding x = = 10 five times Two elephants is ten elephants

5 There are three groups, and each group has four dogs.
Example 2: There are three groups, and each group has four dogs. 3 × 4 = 12 how many  groups how many in each group 3 × 4    =     = 12 three times four dogs is twelve dogs We can solve it by adding.

6  Any number multiplied by ZERO is ZERO!
Zeros  Any number multiplied by ZERO is ZERO! 0 cookies, each having 2 chocolate chips, equal 0 chocolate chips 0 x 0 = 0 0 x 1 = 0 0 x 2 = 0 0 x 3 = 0 0 x 4 = 0 0 x 5 = 0 0 x 6 = 0 0 x 7 = 0 0 x 8 = 0 0 x 9 = 0 1 x 0 = 0 2 x 0 = 0 3 x 0 = 0 4 x 0 = 0 5 x 0 = 0 6 x 0 = 0 7 x 0 = 0 8 x 0 = 0 9 x 0 = 0

7 Ones  Any number multiplied by ONE is itself!
1 cookie having 4 chocolate chips, equals 4 chocolate chip 1 x 0 = 0 1 x 1 = 1 1 x 2 = 2 1 x 3 = 3 1 x 4 = 4 1 x 5 = 5 1 x 6 = 6 1 x 7 = 7 1 x 8 = 8 1 x 9 = 9

8 Twos 2 x 5 = 10 2 cookies, each having 5 chocolate chips, equal 10 chocolate chips 2 x 3 = 6 2 cookies, each having 3 chocolate chips, equal 6 chocolate chips  remember the TWOs is doubling  5 doubled is 10 (5 + 5 = 10)

9 Threes 5 + 3 x 5 = 15 3 cookies, each having 5 chocolate chips, equal 15 chocolate chips Skip Counting (by 3's)  Skip counting is counting while skipping one or more numbers. To skip count by 3's, skip two numbers while counting.  ( )  Many refer to this a "counting by 3's 3 x 5 is skip counting five times or and you are at the answer

10 Fours 6 + 4 x 6 = 24 4 cookies, each having 6 chocolate chips, equal 24 chocolate chips Double-Double  Double-double the number you are multiplying four by.  (Double it twice) 4 x 6 (Double 6 Twice) 6 doubled once is 12, 12 doubled is 24  Another way to figure the answer is double the answer you would get if you multiplied the number by 2. 6 x 2 = 12 12 x 2 = 24

11 5 cookies, each having 6 chocolate chips, equal 30 chocolate chips
Fives 6 + 5 x 6 = 30 5 cookies, each having 6 chocolate chips, equal 30 chocolate chips Skip Counting (by 5's)  To skip count by 5's, skip 4 numbers while counting.  ( )  Many refer to this a "counting by 5's 5 x 6 is skip counting six times or and you are at the answer

12 6 cookies, each having 5 chocolate chips, equal 30 chocolate chips
Sixes 5 + 6 x 5 = 30 6 cookies, each having 5 chocolate chips, equal 30 chocolate chips  There is no easy trick to remember the sixes, this is why it is important to memorize your times tables.

13 Sevens 8 + 7 x 8 = 56 7 cookies, each having 8 chocolate chips, equal 56 chocolate chips  There is no easy trick to remember the sevens.

14 Eights 6 + 8 x 6 = 48 8 cookies, each having 6 chocolate chips, equal 48 chocolate chips  There is no easy trick to remember the eights.

15 Nines 6 + 9 x 6 = 54 6 cookies, each having 9 chocolate chips, equal 54 chocolate chips  Using Your Fingers - 9 x 6 = 54 Step 2: Your fingers represent the numbers 1 through 10. Step 1: Put your hands on the table in front of you. Step 3:  - Each finger to the left of the curled finger represents 10.    - Say 10, 20, 30, 40, 50  - Each finger to the right of the curled finger represents one.     - Count 1, 2, 3, 4.  (Or 51, 52, 53, 54)   - 6 x 9 = 54
