Not at war Urban centers- trade, spurred by the Crusades, led to the growth of large city- states while the rest of Europe was still mostly rural Many Merchants- wealthiest & most powerful class (Medici family) Classical Heritage- Renaissance scholars wanted to return to the learning of the Greeks & Romans
