Overview ME 4182 Design Bids  Swivel Chair and Gun Rest  Vent Air Converter  Automatic Pike Tool  Weed Speed  Pole Caddy  Single Serve Paper Box  Battery Pack w/ power cord attachment  John Deere ALLI-GATOR Deliverables Conclusion

Swivel Chair and Gun Rest Problem Statement : Tree stands used for hunting often have a stationary bar that is part of the frame for the stand. This bar only offers mediocre assistance to the hunter and only when he is aiming straight ahead. Proposed Resolution : A Gun Rest that would swivel from side to side will increase the accuracy range of the gun. By attaching a swivel chair a hunter could also quietly aim at an object.

Vent Air Converter Problem Statement : In a car often people close the air duct vents to stop the flow of air into the cabin. Because the blower remains at a constant rate the remaining air is forced through the other vents left open. Harnessing this increased air flow could prove useful. Proposed Resolution : Design an universal fit device that would attach over a chosen vent and direct the air through a hose in order to be utilized as a mini air compressor.

Automatic Pike Tool Problem Statement : When lineman work on an underground primary cable (12 to 25 kV), they kill it and then "pike" it to ensure it is dead to ensure it is safe to work on. To pike means to stick a sharp object through the outer sheathing and semi-conductor of the cable, and into the actual conductor at the center. This is often a time consuming process. Proposed Resolution : Design a device that will automatically insert the sharp object into the cable and pull it back out without having to place a clamp around the cable and screw it in. To do this, a spring or C02 type device could be used.

Weed Speed Problem Statement : When a landscape professional works with a weed eater much time is wasted replacing the wire. The wire often comes in a flimsy case that the person as to battle in order to extract a small portion of wire. Then the person has to find something appropriate with which to cut the wire. The whole process is quite a hassle. Proposed Resolution : A rack to be added on to a landscape truck/trailer, that holds weed eater wire on a spool. When extra line is needed, an arm with an edge on it is lifted, the line pulled out to the appropriate length, and the arm is lowered, cutting the line and holding the spool in place.

Pole Caddy Problem Statement : When a utility pole is to be replaced, the power company typically has to come out first, set a new pole, transfer their wire and hardware, and top the broken pole off until the other utilities can transfer their stuff to the new pole. Then whoever owns the pole (either power or phone co.) comes out to remove it. Proposed Resolution : This device is like 2 rings that fit around the new pole and the old pole and clamps them together. After the power transfers, they can cut away the other utilities section of the pole, and leave it hanging attached to the new pole. The old/broken pole can then be pulled, saving an extra trip. When the other utilities transfer, all that is left is the small (probably 4') section of the old pole.

Single Serve Paper Box Problem Statement : Newspapers are a part of everyday life here in the US. Often people buy their copy from street machines that allow someone to pay then open the box and retrieve their paper. Unfortunately some people take more than one newspaper. Proposed Resolution : A device that can be attached to an existing newspaper box that prevents someone from paying for one paper and taking a whole stack. It only allows a person who has paid to take only one paper.

Battery Pack w/ power cord attachment Problem Statement : When using a cordless drill, sometimes the battery dies before the job is done and to be able to finish it is necessary to recharge the drill battery pack which could take some time. Proposed Resolution : Design a way to attach a power cord directly to the battery then when the battery goes dead all you need to do is plug it in the wall and finish. This could also serve as a way of recharging the battery in the drill.

John Deere ALLI-GATOR Problem Statement : The goal of the ALLI-GATOR project is to develop an amphibious Gator utility vehicle capable of deep water navigation in addition to existing land capabilities. Proposed Resolution : Design a system using conventional marine mechanisms that provides propulsion and steering in water for the Gator.
