3  Purpose:  to measure how many times either dwellings or people were missed or counted more than once.  outcomes used when determining the Estimates Residential Population.  evaluates the effectiveness of Census collection procedures. What is the Post Enumeration Survey?

4  The Post Enumeration involves:  enumerating a sample of the population  comparing these results against the Census results  using the results from the Post Enumeration Survey when determining the Estimated Residential Population How is the Post Enumeration Survey conducting in Australia?

5  A sample of approximately 32,000 dwellings is selected - about.3%  enumeration occurs 3-4 weeks after Census night, while Census is still fresh in peoples minds  conducted by interview with an adult asked to supply information all residents The enumeration

6  Information obtained includes:  name  date of birth  country of birth  marital status  the address they spent Census Night - more than one address can be provided  When an interviewer arrives at a dwelling, it is possible that the dwelling:  still has their Census form - the dwelling is considered to have been missed by the Census process. 7  Post Enumeration and Census forms compared to:  find the original dwelling to ensure it was counted  find each person at one or more of the addresses provided  determine if the people are the same based on comparison of Census and Post Enumeration Survey responses Searching and Matching

8  If the dwelling or person is not included in the Census results - undercount has occurred  If the dwelling or person is found more than once - overcount has occurred  If the dwelling or person is counted once and once only, the Census process worked!  Rules can also exist to determine partial match for a person Searching and Matching

9  Put very briefly.....  The Census population count is supplemented by the Post Enumeration Results when determining the Estimated Residential Population  When determining the Estimated Residential Population in Australia, we take into account:  Australian residents temporarily overseas  Residents from other countries temporarily in Australia  Post Enumeration Results  Births and Deaths  These are used to determine the Estimated Residential Population.
