2 Women and Work Women have always worked –Not always paid or valued Separation of Public and Private –Public- political, economic, work- sphere of men –Private- home, children, homecare- sphere of women (assumption that unpaid work is based on love or natural capacities) –Connected to low pay for women- women’s pay is seen as “supplemental”

3 Marxist Feminist Theories Women are oppressed and this oppression comes from private/property and capitalist system Women are paid lower wages in the public sphere and therefore, “subsidize” the capitalist system Women’s work in the home is unpaid and therefore, “subsidizes” capitalism and a nation’s development Child care, equal pay, support and pay for homemaking and childrearing

4 Important Statistics Women do 2/3 the world’s work and receive 5% of the world’s income 48% of the U.S. workforce is women, African-American women have the highest rate of workforce participation 61% of women with children under three work outside of the home Over a lifetime, an average 25 year old woman who works full-time until the age of 65 will earn on average $523,000 less than an average working man
