1 Unit #4 Graphing and Equation of the Line Lesson #1 Graphing Ordered Pairs

2 Cartesian Plain A system where points can be placed on a two dimensional grid. A Cartesian plain is made up of two lines that cross at a point called the origin. It can be labeled as point (0,0). The Cartesian plain is made up of 4 quadrants. The horizontal line is called the X axis and the vertical line is called the Y axis. Numbers to the right of the origin on the X axis are positive and numbers to the left of the origin are negative. Numbers on the Y axis above the X axis are positive and numbers below are negative.

4 Graphing Ordered Pairs The point (3,-2) is called an ordered pair, it represents a point on the Cartesian Plain where 3 is the x coordinate and –2 y coordinate. The x coordinate tells you how far to move right or left of the origin and the y coordinate tells you how far to move up or down the Y axis from the x coordinate. Points on the Cartesian Plain are called ordered pairs as the order that they appear is very important. X is always first. That is why they are called ordered pairs.

5 Example Graph the following points: A. (3,-2), B. (-6,5), C. (5,3), D. (-4,0), E. (4,0), F. (-3,1), G. (0,-6) What Quadrant is each point in?
