2. What is an English language learner:  A person who is learning the English language in addition to their native language Ex: Someone who grew up speaking only Spanish and has now started to speak English.

3. ELL are:  Highly complex group of students -diversely gifted  Strong sense in multiple cultures

4. Characteristics and warning signs of ELL students:  Self-conscious; smiles hesitantly  Observes surroundings carefully  Seeks out other ELL students  Experiences a silent period  Responds with 1 or 2 memorized expressions  Copies oral expressions spoken by other students  Easily frustrated THINGS TO LOOK FOR

5. Challenges ELL students face:  When they started to learn English  Unfamiliar with typical knowledge in the English culture  Sentence structure  Stepping outside of the “rules”  Fear of interacting with English native speakers

6. Teaching ELL students : What to do:  Speak slowly  Use gestures and body language  Make lessons VISUAL  Link new info with prior knowledge  Write lesson plans on the board (part of visual)  Stay away from lectures  Work in small groups  Allow alternative assignments for the ELL students TEACHERS MUST BE PATIENT!!!!!!

7. Statistics of ELL students:  highest amount of ELL students in public school were in the West : Alaska, California, Nevada, Colorado, and Texas  Lowest amount in West Virginia  More ELL students live in cities than suburban, town, or rural areas
