What is an English language learner: A person who is learning the English language in addition to their native language Ex: Someone who grew up speaking only Spanish and has now started to speak English.

ELL are: Highly complex group of students -diversely gifted Strong sense in multiple cultures

Characteristics and warning signs of ELL students: Self-conscious; smiles hesitantly Observes surroundings carefully Seeks out other ELL students Experiences a silent period Responds with 1 or 2 memorized expressions Copies oral expressions spoken by other students Easily frustrated THINGS TO LOOK FOR

Challenges ELL students face: When they started to learn English Unfamiliar with typical knowledge in the English culture Sentence structure Stepping outside of the “rules” Fear of interacting with English native speakers

Teaching ELL students : What to do: Speak slowly Use gestures and body language Make lessons VISUAL Link new info with prior knowledge Write lesson plans on the board (part of visual) Stay away from lectures Work in small groups Allow alternative assignments for the ELL students TEACHERS MUST BE PATIENT!!!!!!

Statistics of ELL students: highest amount of ELL students in public school were in the West : Alaska, California, Nevada, Colorado, and Texas Lowest amount in West Virginia More ELL students live in cities than suburban, town, or rural areas
