THE NATURE OF TECHNOLOGY IN SOCIETY

CAREER CONNECTION Utah and PLTW pre-engineering Communications Visual arts Information technology Architects Engineers and engineering technicians Graphic designers

TECHNOLOGY Technology is the study of the human-made world around us. Engineers use technology to find solutions to make our life and the world itself better. The ‘designed world’ that engineers and others create (invent), or change (innovate), include technologies in:

TECHNOLOGY  Medicine (human health.)  Biotechnology (the study of our relationship with plants and animals.)  Energy and Power (energy is the ability to do work; power is how fast that work is getting done.)  Information and Communication (transferring information back and forth.)  Transportation (moving people and things from one place to another.)  Manufacturing (making things.)  Construction (building houses, schools, bridges, and other structures.)

TECHNOLOGY Do you think you can match the correct technology type with an example of it in the table below? Technology TypeExample of a Technology in use 1 ManufacturingaUsing wind to create electrical power. 2 ConstructionbCreating a new phone app. 3 MedicinecBuilding a highway. 4 TransportationdShipping natural gas in a pipeline. 5 Information / CommunicationseFinding a cure for a disease. 6 Energy and PowerfUsing goat DNA to make spider silk. 7 BiotechnologygMaking a new type of car.

CAREER PATHWAYS Career Pathways show students a direct connection between doing well in school and being able to get a good job or start college more easily when they graduate high school. Students who focus on a pathway take classes that are closely matched to the job or schooling that they want. Career Pathways include information about classes and jobs in:

CAREER PATHWAYS AgricultureBusiness Economics and Entrepreneurship Health Sciences Information Technology Marketing Skilled and Technical Sciences Technology and Engineering

CAREER PATHWAYS For this activity, you will be learning about Career Pathways and identify careers in Skilled and Technical Sciences Education and Technology and Engineering Education. There are hundreds of careers in these areas but you will identify and study 26 careers.

VOLVELLE A volvelle is a set of circular disks used to sort information. The top disk has slots or pointers and the bottom disk has text, charts, pictures, or other data. The top disk reveals information on the bottom layer through the holes or pointers. As the top disk is rotated to a different location, different information is revealed. Volvelles have been around a very long time and scientists long ago used them to map the stars, calculate mathematical formulas, etc. They have been called a paper version of the first computers. Here is a volvelle with information about chemical reactions.  Courtesy, calculating.wordpress.com

STEM CONNECTION Using the volvelles, identify careers and how much STEM education is involved in them. Remember what each letter of STEM stands for so you can use the correct letters (S, T, E, or M) depending on what your volvelle reveals. ‘STEM’ education stands for classes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Careers in STEM often require more of these four classes while a student is in junior high.

1, 2, 4, OR MORE Most jobs require that a person have a certain amount of education or training. The Certificates and Degrees volvelle shows many types of common diplomas, training, certificates, and degrees available at high school and beyond to train for careers. 1, 2, 4, or more years of schooling after high school can prepare a student in a career pathway for a great career!

ASSIGNMENT On your three worksheets, you will write education and STEM information about 26 careers in Technology and Engineering and Skilled and Technical Sciences. To do this, you will use: The Certificates and Degrees volvelle The 8 career pathway volvelles The small chart on all the other volvelles that shows diplomas, certificates, degrees, and STEM classes needed. 

THE REASON WE INVENT AND INNOVATE There is always a need and a demand for something that does not exist. Sometimes people know what that is and other times people don’t even know that it’s an option. These needs have fueled the drive of inventors and innovators for centuries The could be the needs are the results of demands, values, and interests of individuals, industries, and societies.

THE MOST IMPORTANT INVENTION OR INNOVATION OF ALL TIME You will follow teacher directions as you form a group with other students and decide together what has the claim as the most important invention or innovation of all time. After you have decided on an invention or innovation you will then plan a short presentation to the class on why you think yours is the most important

ADVERTISEMENTS FROM THE PAST You will now form up into groups of 2 Review and analyze an advertisement from the past. You will interpret the ad in terms of demands, values, and interests of individuals and societies, both when the add was first introduced and in the present Prepare a brief presentation focusing on the reasons and situations in which your invention was created. Add in important dates and events on a timeline that apply to the chosen advertisement.
