Female Terms Ovaries- oophor/o, ovari/o- Produce ova (eggs) and female hormones. Fallopian tubes- salping/o- Catch mature ova, provide the site for fertilization, transport ova to uterus. Uterus- hyster/o, metr/o, metri/o, uter/o- Protects and supports the developing child. Placenta- placent/o- Exchanges nutrients and waste between the mother and fetus during pregnancy. Hysterectomy- The surgical removal of the uterus that may or may not include the cervix. Fibroid tumor- A benign tumor composed of muscle and fibrous tissue that occurs in the wall of the uterus.

Male Terms Testicles, testes- orch/o, orchid/o, test/I, test/o, testicul/o- Produce sperm and the male hormone testosterone. Prostate gland- The prostate secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. Seminal vesicle- secrete a significant proportion of the fluid that ultimately becomes semen. Vas deferens- transport sperm from the epididymis. Epididymis- Holds the sperm Vasectomy- The vas deferens is severed so sperm cannot enter the seminal stream.

Words Menopause> the normal stopping of the monthly menstrual periods Premenstrual Syndrome> symptoms occurring within the two-week period before menstruation: AKA PMS Postpartum> is the period beginning immediately after the birth of a child and extending for about six weeks where hormones and uterus are returning to normal. Cervicitis> inflammation of the cervix Colposcopy> the direct visual examination of the tissues of the cervix and vagina using a colposcope Gynecologist> a specialist in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system Mammogram> an X-ray image of your breast used to screen for breast cancer Ovariectomy> surgical removal of one or both ovaries Orchitis> inflammation of one or both testicles Oophoritis> inflammation of an ovary
