Scottish Network for Families Affected by Drugs Residential Rehabilitation A Family View

“The ultimate aim of drug treatment and rehabilitation is to help individuals sustain drug free lives” Source: REVIEW OF DRUG TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION SERVICES

The Family Perspective A resounding – not enough residential rehabilitation treatment available! (based on responses from individual SNFAD members) (Response from SNFAD re treatment care and rehabilitation review)

THE FAMILY EXPERIENCE Residential Rehabilitation seems to be the last resort when all else has failed! Probable family breakdown by this time Drug treatment services fail to involve families Lack of awareness regarding treatment There seems to be a misconception that families interfere instead of giving support Families seem to have difficulty distinguishing between Residential Detox and Residential Rehabilitation

BARRIERS Funding Post Code Lottery – Rural areas disadvantaged Mothers can’t access residential rehabilitation because of lack of specialised provision re childcare issues Travelling costs

INVOLVING FAMILIES IN TREATMENT Consult with families Prepare families eg, realistic expectations Support for “Kinship Carers” so that they can provide positive childcare within the family – practical and financial support

INVOLVING FAMILIES IN TREATMENT Family therapy particularly regards relapse and medication, eg Castle Craig Family Weekends Increased access to the development of parenting skills

RE-INTEGRATION BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY There is a need for more half-way houses. Schemes such as Progress to Work should be more fully utilised Offer families & actively encourage them to take part in family mediation
