Thematic Maps! How do I interpret different kinds of maps? Interpret = to make sense of a map Physical Political

Expectations 1.Add definitions 2.Color/Label the Key 3.Add the colors to the map like the ones in the atlas and book.

1. Land Cover/Vegetation - Atlas pg 26 1.Show trees and grasses that cover the land (or don’t) 2.Show crops planted by people 3.What covers the land affects where people live and how they use the land

2. Elevation - Book page 54 1. Show how high or low the land is 2. 0 ft is at “sea level,” or flat 3. The level of the land affects where people live and how they use the land

3. Rainfall – Atlas page 29 1. All living things need water 2. Where rain is scarce, life is limited 3. Patterns of rainfall affect what can grow and how people live

4. Physical (Landforms) - book pg 54 1. Landforms are natural features of the land 2. Most are shaped by flowing water and erosion 3. Show mountains, hills, plateaus, and basins

5. Political (Regions) – Atlas pg 27 1.Show features that humans have created on Earth's surface 2. May show cities, states, provinces, territories, & countries 3. Show how size may affect that region’s economy and people

6. Land Use – Atlas page 30 (bottom) 1. Providing food is the main way most land is used 2. Many land uses produce food that is sold for profit ($$$)! 3. Also show where goods are made in cities

7. Growing Season – Atlas pg 30 (top) 1.Show the time of year when crops can grow 2. Some places are hot or cold all year 3. Some have seasons

8. Population Density – Atlas pg 31 1. Show the average number of people living in an area 2. Only certain regions of the world are densely populated 3. Areas that are cold or very dry will have a low population density
