1 Languages of World Everyone in the world has a language. They often express the same ideas, but they all use their own language.

2 Can you locate the following cities? Do you know what language they speak in these places? Nairobi, London, Tokyo, New York, Santiago, Beijing, Paris, Rome

3 Each person will use different sounds and words because each language has its own sound system and its own vocabulary. People who share the same language have a great deal in common. Language brings people together. Why would it be nice to be able to speak to a person from another country in his/her own country?

6 Language Families Languages are assigned to the same family based on their similarities. Indo-European Family: It consists of languages now spoken in the Americas, most of Europe, and northern India and some parts of Asia. It is thought that speakers of the original Indo- European language lived in central Russia. There is a striking similarities in the numerals one to ten. (page 11 TB)

9 English belongs to Germanic group of the Indo-European family. However, there are a lot of French and Latin words and grammatical forms in the English? Example: perfume, castle (from French) Pope, solar (from Latin) Do you know why? In 1066, a very import event took place. This event brought about many changes in the English language. The Normans invaded England from France bringing their language with them.

Many of the world’s languages can be grouped into families because they have a definite resemblance to each other. Some languages are like first cousin because they are closely related.
