Be sure Term 1 Portfolio includes: 1. SELF-REPORT CARD 2. Checkpoint #1 & #2 3. Cells Quest 4. Unit Test: Cells, Cell Membrane, Transport 5. Labs (I have these!) 6. Membrane Model Criteria Sheet 7. Just Write Activity  Endocytosis 8. EVIDENCE of YOUR learning -any other assignments or study materials you designed that show your practice & understanding

1. Carbohydrates 2. Lipids 3. Proteins 4. Nucleic Acids

GeneralFunction: Quick, short term energy storage Molecules Involved: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen Ratio of Molecules: ratio of C:H:O is 1:2:1 General Molecular Formula: generic equation for carbs C n H 2n O n

BREAKING NEWS: G20 Leaders to Discuss SUGAR TAX!

1. Carbohydrate Lab Part 1: Testing for starch Part 2: Testing for glucose 2. Questions 1-4 and Conclusion due next class 3. Check the Criteria Sheet so you can ace it!!! 4. ALSO: See remainder of this powerpoint for checking last day’s homework

Simple Carbohydrates: Examples & Diagrams -any 3 to 7 carbon in a molecule is a simple sugar called a monosaccharide. Ex: Any Pentose (5-carbon sugar) Deoxyribose  found in DNA Ribose  in RNA Ex: Any Hexose (6 carbon sugar) Glucose  in blood, cell’s main energy source Fructose  in fruits, sweetest of monomers

Glucose Found in: Blood Used for: Cell’s main energy Source Diagram:

Fructose Found in: Fruits Used for: Quick energy Diagram:

Maltose Found in: Not often in natural food sources, made when amylase breaks down starch ex) carmelized glucose Used for: Energy Diagram:

Disaccharides -contains two monosaccharides Ex: maltose, sucrose Ex: glucose + fructose = sucrose (table sugar)

Examples of Polymers Starch – Found in: in plants Use for: storage form of glucose Diagram: Glycogen-  Found in: animals  Used for: storage forms of glucose  Diagram:

Cellulose- Found in: the cell walls of plants Used for: provides structure & support Chitin -found in the cell Walls of fungus and the Exoskeleton of arthropods

Comparing Structural Diagrams of Polysaccharides:

1a) each point on the diagram except the O is a carbon  -5 carbons circled in total b) This is a Pentose sugar  made of 5 carbons c) 3 examples of hexose sugars: -glucose -fructose -galactose d) Remember the general Molecular formula for a carb is CnH2nOn soo…. glucose: C6H1206 pentose: C5H1oO5 e) A monosaccharide is made up of one sugar molecule, and has 3-7 carbons in it. A disaccharide is made up of two sugar molecules joined together and has more than 7 carbons.
