3 II. Literary Element: Tone A. Definition: The author’s use of language to show the author’s feelings or attitude. Tone is shown with word choice, punctuation, sentence structure, and figures of speech

4 What does the tone of each example tell us about the author’s opinion of the grandpa? Example 1: Weak, exhausted, and helpless, Grandpa has to live with us. What good does he do? When he’s not spending hours napping, he spends his time wasting away watching Wheel of Fortune with the volume turned way up so he can hear. Example 2: I don’t know what I’d do without Grandpa. Every night he shares exciting, insightful stories about his life. His stories show how different life used to be, but they still give great advice for me today.

Building Background Afghanistan consists of people from a variety of different political, ethnic, and religious groups The differences in the people groups have caused political turmoil When the Taliban took over in the 1990s, conflicts between different people groups caused massacres of Shi’ite Muslims Until 2001, thousands of Afghans left every year, mostly going to Iran and Pakistan
