1 1Chapter 1 Lit Notes8/27/12 Literary Elements– aspects or characteristics of literature. Plot– the chain of related events that tells us what happens in a story. Subplot– plots that are part of the larger story but are not as important. Conflict– problem(s) faced by a character. –Internal Conflicts– take place in a character’s mind. (Fear, jealousy)

2 1Chapter 1 Notes8/27/12 –External Conflicts– when a character struggles with outside forces. Climax– the event that decides the outcome of the conflict. Resolution– how the story turns out. The end of the story. Theme– the central idea or message the author conveys. Parallel Episodes– events which are repeated several times. (3 Little Pigs)

3 1Chapter 1 Notes8/27/12 Context Clues– hints, embedded in the story (foreshadowing). Etymology– origin and development of a word. Proposition– an important idea or opinion that can be supported by facts, statistics, examples, anecdotes, definitions or expert opinions.
