Seismographs in Schools- Vision Our Expectations Contract Instruments are on loan Stay in contact and engaged Newsletter, Teachable Moments, Animations, Posters, Activities Forum Annual Survey Email (sishelp@iris.edu) Student interaction with instrument Use the instrument to raise awareness Return instrument if assignment changes Plotting Earthquake Epicenters

Seismographs in Schools- Vision

Basic Implementation: Raises student awareness Only runs AS-1 prior to and following the geophsyics unit Prints seismograms and posts them next to a world map for students to view

Seismographs in Schools- Vision Intermediate Implementation: Raises student awareness & practices teacher’s skills interpreting seismic data Runs station year round Keeps station catalog of events recorded on station looking up parameters on USGS website. Has SnagIt/Fling running so helicorder is displayed on the web Shares image files of events recorded with other teachers via email Prints seismograms and posts them next to a world map for students to view Calculates magnitudes for events from records for very large events Determines distance to event from records for very large events Uploads large events to IRIS to share with other teachers Downloads data from IRIS for further exploration or comparison

Seismographs in Schools- Vision Advanced Implementation: Raises student awareness, uses teacher’s skills interpreting seismic data to allow students to practice interpreting seismic data Runs station year round Assigns students on rotating basis to keeps station catalog of events recorded by looking up parameters on USGS website Has SnagIt/Fling running so helicorder is displayed on school’s (or other) website Prints seismograms and posts them next to a world map for students to view Calculates magnitudes for events from records Determines distance to event from records Analyzes data for smaller events or other interesting recordings for process of science Has students calculate magnitude of events from records for very large events Has students determines distance to event from records for very large events Has students explore process of science with data or use data for science fair projects. Uploads large events to IRIS to share with other teachers Runs geophysics club

Seismographs in Schools- Vision 4 Instruments donated in memory of John C Lahr, research seismologist, U.S. Geological Survey Napa High School Jerome High School Burroughs High School Many Farms High School Influential and giving people like John Lahr live on through the actions of those they have touched. Surely we are better for having known and learned from John Lahr. And we will share his ideas and inspiration with many others, so his goodness and wisdom can multiply into the future -Robert Butler, University of Portland
