Atmosphere The surrounding air of the Earth
2
Layers of the atmosphere There are 4 layers in the atmosphere They are the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere.
3
Troposphere This is the layer that is closest to the surface of the earth This is where most of our weather occurs It’s elevation ranges from 0 to 12 km above sea level.
4
Stratosphere This layer sits on top of the troposphere It’s elevation ranges from 12km to around 50 km This layer contains the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful sunlight
5
Mesosphere This layer is above the stratosphere It’s elevation ranges from 50 to 80 km Most meteroids burn up here.
6
Thermosphere This is the highest layer of the atmosphere It’s altitude starts above 80 km. This is where space shuttles go. It is split into two parts: the ionosphere and the exosphere.
7
Ionosphere The ionosphere falls between 80 and 400 km. Ions break down here, reflecting radio waves back down to Earth – causing the Aurora Borealis.
8
Exosphere Above 400 km Atmosphere is extremely thin Satellites for phones and television pictures orbit here.
