Video Conferencing: All you really want to know. 21/08/2002

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel What is Video Conferencing? Video conferencing in its most basic form is the transmission of image (video) and speech (audio) back and forth between two or more physically separate locations.

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Video Conferencing: Why?  Enrich communication  Non-verbal communication is important. …Studies show that most - as much as 70% - of all human communication signals are non-verbal. In other words, it helps if we can see the people we are talking to.

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Video Conferencing: Why?  Exploit efficiencies of time / cost  Requires less time to participate – no travel time to and from means you can be more productive  Reduces travel requirement – be more selective about when you need to be physically present

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Video Conferencing: Why?  Exploit innovative uses  Health – remote expertise made local  Environmental - observe wildlife in nature remotely  Security – observe multiple locations from a central location  Education – extend the reach of the traditional classroom

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Video Conferencing: How?  H.323 is an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standard for video conferencing over IP networks The reason for the standard is to enable interoperability between different vendors' implementations of these components.

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Videoconferencing: How  Point to Point eg. Typical telephone call  Point to Multipoint eg. Conference call

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Video Conferencing: Requirements  2 Video conferencing pioneers (choose only hefty ones with plenty of positive attitude and patience.)  2 Video conferencing terminal end stations (often called clients; can be of same or different vendors as long as H.323 compliance is verified.)  2 Peripheral sets, including camera, microphone, and speakers.  2 Workstations (probably of the Windows variety though a few Mac and Unix terminal end stations may become available in specialty shops.)  1 High speed network connection (at least 128Kbps.)  2 IP addresses for workstations.  1 Multipoint Conferencing Unit (MCU) - optional.

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Videoconferencing in ABEL  CIRC – Peter Holgerson  VCON ViGo  VCON 9000

plug into learning www.abelearn.ca bel Video Conferencing - Demonstration Jim Poole @ York University Obadiah George @ Seneca King Campus
