Objectives The student will: Perform searches and explain how to refine a search to retrieve better information Identify resources for finding information in addition to ranking based search engines Differentiate between ranking based search engines and social bookmarking (collaborative) search engines. Use a variety of Web 2.0 applications Develop and use a rubric to evaluate websites

Internet Scavenger Hunt In your groups… Create a word file – You have 25 minutes to find all the items on internet scavenger hunt list. In your word file list: 1. The information or item requested. 2. The web site in which you found it 3. The steps you took to find each item. 4. Who found it

Other Resources for Finding Information What are some resources other than search engines you used to find the information?

Trying Other Resources In your groups… Try out some of these other resources. Which can you use reliably for school projects?

Web 2.0 Applications In your groups… Take the assigned Web 2.0 application. Set up an account if needed. Explore the site and its features. Prepare a presentation on your site for the class.

Web 2.0 Applications Your presentation should cover: If your website is a social bookmarking website (numbers 1-4): “What are the differences between rankings based search engines (e.g. Google) and social bookmarking search engines?” If you website is a word cloud web site (numbers 5-6): “Why would you want to create word clouds?” If your web site is a list creation web site (numbers 7-8): “What are the advantages of using a list creation site? What are the disadvantages?”
