Complete Group Study Proposals Peer Review Study Proposals Define and Evaluate all types of study DESIGNS and METHODS Homework: Complete Exam Q
2
Group Study Proposals 3 Hypotheses IV + Operationalisation DV + Operationalisation Controlling Extraneous Variables Sample Design
3
Peer Review Each other’s study proposals! 1.Complete review sheet Justify your views in each box 2. Choose a green or orange post-it Green for Go-Ahead and research! Orange for ‘Warning’ this may not be good…
4
Describe the definition, advantages and disadvantages for each design; Study Designs Repeated measures Independent groups Matched pairs design
5
Pick a number… 1, 2 or 3! Remember your number!!
6
Study Designs Repeated measures Every participant takes part in all conditions Independent groups Different Pps are used in each condition Matched pairs design Pps only take part in one condition but are matched on variables important/relevant to the study e.g. age, gender, intelligence etc
7
Study Designs 1. Create an example for each of the designs using your proposal 2. Look up two advantages and two disadvantages for your design 1’s – Repeated measures 2s – Independent groups 3s – Matched pairs
9
Study Methods Laboratory A study in an environment where variables are tightly controlled Field Any study carried out outside the lab, but where the IV is still deliberately manipulated Natural The environment and IV are naturally occuring
10
Observations Naturalistic: in a natural environment, everything is left as normal Controlled: Some variables are controlled by the researcher Participant: The researcher takes part and observes from a Pps PoV Non-participant: The researcher watches the Pps from outside Study Methods continued…

Questionnaires: A set of questions designed to investigate a topic Interviews: A structured or unstructured set of Qs that are delivered face-to-face Case studies: the study of an individual, small group or event, usually using information from a range of sources Study Methods continued…
12
Study Designs 1. Create a Lab, Field and Natural example of your proposal 2. Look up two advantages and two disadvantages for your design 1’s – Lab 2s – Field 3s – Natural
