2  Robert was born on March 22, 1868 and he died on December 19, 1953. [1]  He was an American Physicist. [1]  He received a Nobel Prize in physics for his measurements of the charge on the electron and his work on the photoelectric effect. [1]  Robert served as president of Caltech from 1921-1945. [1]  He also served on the board of trustees for Science Service from 1921-1953. [1]  He received a bachelors degree in the Classics from Oberlin college in 1891. [1]  Millikan also received his PHD in physics from Columbia University in 1895. [1]  In 1921-1945 Robert focused on the study on cosmic rays at the University of Chicago, he believed that cosmic rays photons were “the birth cry of new atoms continually being created by God”. [1]  Millikan died of a heart attack in 1953 at age 85. [1]

3  As a scientist, Millikan made numerous discoveries, including the fields of electricity, optics, and molecular physics. [2]  His earliest success was determining the charge carried by an electron, using the elegant “falling drop method”. [2] He also proved that this was a constant for all electrons, demonstrating the atomic structure of electricity.(1910) [2]  In the process of studying Planck’s constant “H”, he put an end to all opposition to the atomic and kinetic theories of matter.(1912-1915)[2]

4  Millikan’s oil drop method, measured an electrons charge showing that the charge was a constant rather than a statistical. Meaning that Robert’s significance to the development of an atom is that he figured out the charge’s of the electrons within the atom, using this method.[3]

5  Photoelectric- pertaining to the electronic or other electric effects produced by light. [3]  Cosmic Rays- a radiation of high penetrating power that originates in outer space and consists partly of high-energy atomic nuclei.[3]  Planck’s Constant “H”-is a physical constant reflecting the sizes of energy in quantum mechanics.[3]
