Class divisions and identities overrode other identities, including ethnicity, language or religion

5 Definitions of Class In the UK class is determined largely by: Occupation and the status that goes with it Background, education and qualifications Income Wealth. Put these four in the order that you perceive to be most influential, and then add other class barometers that you can think of.

6 Possibles Accents. Ie Scouse, Geordie, Brum. Cockney. All are often regarded as lower class, working class labels, but are they. Location. Post code. Member of clubs and societies. Where you go on holiday (and how) Clothes

7 Identities and Citizenship Under threat. Are we no longer British? Has membership of the EU, The consequences of devolution to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Economic migrants, Social disturbances in inner city areas, 9/11 and London bombings... Eroded our sense of Brutishness or created new identities. Discuss.

8 Migration and Immigration Why doe people move? Economic social and environmental factors. The search for a better way of life. The hope of an improved job, career path, higher income and better facilities. Be close to friends and families. Political reasons, freedom from oppression, armed conflict, civil war, natural disasters, religious fundamentalism.

9 Historical Norse, Normans, Huguenots from France 17 th century. Irish escaping hunger 19 th century. Jews fleeing from pogroms in late 19 th century Russia and WW2. By 2008 a total of 1 million people had arrived from new EU states to the UK, half have returned. Home office estimate that there are 500,000 illegal immigrants in the UK.
