3 Benjamin Day started the Sun, the first successful penny paper.

4 James Gordon Bennett started the Herald, which would become the most successful paper, selling worldwide.

5 Horace Greeley’s Tribune believed a paper should educate people as well as keep them informed.

6 New York was the birthplace of the Penny Press. Newsboys bought the papers and resold them, their cries filling the New York Streets.

7 The popularity of the Penny Press grew, and soon the sensational, cheap newspapers were in demand all over the country.

8 The legacy of the Penny Press lives on in the use of advertising as a source of income, and in the informational, educational, and entertainment articles in today’s newspapers.
