Gene Mapping ROBERT SANTOS ENGLISH 100 ESP NOVEMBER 2 2015

What is genetic mapping? Gene Mapping is a way that researchers to identify where a gene came from and where it is connected to It can determine if a disease transmitted from parent to child is connected to other genes https://www.genome.gov/10000715
3
Creating a Genetic Map Researchers take blood cells and/or tissue from people of the same family that have a certain disease (diabetes, cancer, etc.) They then examine the samples and look for patterns, which they call markers If a gene is close to a marker, researchers can then “zero in” on the certain gene because they can assume that this is the reason why a disease is being passed on from generation to generation. http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/L/Li nkage.html http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/L/Li nkage.html

The Human Genome Project HGP was an international scientific research project that tried to determine the sequence of the base pairs that make up human DNA. They also wanted to identify and map all of the genes of the human genome. The project was proposed in 1984 and completed in 2003.

Questions Can Gene mapping lead to eliminating diseases such as cancer and diabetes? Are there any negative aspects to gene mapping? Has gene mapping terminated any prevalent diseases in certain families?
