2 The tongue When you chew food into smaller bits some of them dissolve into your saliva Once food particles are in solution the taste buds on the tongue can detect them Tongue detects: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and Umami Papillae Taste Buds Tongue

3 The tooth Your teeth break your food down into smaller pieces (remember, scientists call this physical digestion ) Tooth structure: Crown Root Enamel: Made from calcium. Hardest part of the body Dentin: similar to bone Pulp cavity: contains nerves and blood vessels Root canal

4 Teeth Incisors: For biting off bits of food Canines: For tearing into food (meat!) Molars: For crushing and grinding food Premolars: For grinding food

5 Stomach Cardiac sphincter Pyloric sphincter The stomach is a site of both chemical and physical digestion. The two ends are held closed by sphincters (which close tight like the drawstrings on a hood) The stomach lining is called the ‘lumen’ Special cells make gastric fluids
