Motion IPC NOTES

MOTION & POSITION motion – a change in an object’s position relative to a reference point

DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT distance – the total length traveled displacement – the distance and direction of an object’s change in position

DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT Billy runs 2 full laps around the track. If each lap is 400 m, what is his total distance traveled?

DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT Billy runs 2 full laps around the track. If each lap is 400 m, what is his total distance traveled? distance = 800 m

DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT Billy runs 2 full laps around the track. If each lap is 400 m, what is his displacement?

DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT Billy runs 2 full laps around the track. If each lap is 400 m, what is his displacement? displacement = 0 m

SPEED speed – the distance an object travels per unit time There are 3 types of speed: constant, average & instantaneous

SPEED constant speed – speed that does not change over time ex) driving with cruise control

SPEED average speed – the total distance traveled divided by the total time traveled ex) average speed for a trip

SPEED instantaneous speed – the speed at an exact moment ex) the speed listed on a speeding ticket

GRAPHING DISTANCE VS. TIME Graphing distance vs. time shows velocity. Time = independent variable = X-axis Distance = dependent variable = Y-axis

GRAPHING DISTANCE VS. TIME What is the total distance traveled at 30s?

GRAPHING DISTANCE VS. TIME How long did it take to travel 80m?

GRAPHING DISTANCE VS. TIME What is happening between 20s and 48s?

CALCULATING SPEED & VELOCITY V = d t

CALCULATING SPEED & VELOCITY V = d t V = velocity or speed (m/s) d = distance (m) t = time (s)

PRACTICE PROBLEM #1 What is the average speed of a race car that travels 800 m in only 6.8 seconds?

PRACTICE PROBLEM #2 What is the velocity of a snail that takes 120 seconds to travel a distance of 0.336 m?

PRACTICE PROBLEM #3 How far does Garfield walk to get lasagna if he walks at a speed of 1.5 m/s for a total of 12 seconds?

PRACTICE PROBLEM #4 How long will it take a cyclist to go 1600 m at a speed of 9 m/s?
