ART AND ARCHITECTURE As Charlemagne conquered new areas new churches, monasteries, and convents were built. It was a period of major building. Byzantine architecture was the model for most major churches including Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen) Many of the churches included mosaics or painted walls just like the Byzantines

DIVISION OF THE EMPIRE Charlemagne left his empire to his weak son, Louis the Pious Louis’ family turned on him and at his death his three sons (Louis the German, Lothair, and Charles the Bald) divided the empire The Treaty of Verdun split the Carolingian empire in 843 and established 3 separate kingdoms
