HISTORY LESSON Kirby Ferguson is making the argument that EVERYTHING is a remix Remixing was originally coined for music Mostly used in hip hop, genre that incorporates most samples from existing recordings Chic > Sugarhill Gang > Grandmaster Flash > Father MC > Will Smith > Daft Punk Remixing applied in movies Scary Movie?

LEGAL REMIXING Cover vs Knock-offs Performance of other material Copy that stay within legal boundaries
5
REMIXING IN MOVIES Most box office hits rely on existing material Approximately 7 out the top 10 movies of each year are either: Remakes Sequels Adaptations
6
WHY? Why do consumers still find remakes attractive? With respect to music, why should I listen to a remade song if I can listen to the original? Has the human imagination come to a dead end? Is this why “borrow” from the material that has come before us? Is it considered plagiarism? If one person remakes a work, does it make it inherently permissible for anyone to remix the work thereafter? How does this differ from academic material? Why cant a student remix a scholarly article?
