Island hopping: Battle of Iwo Jima –Feb-Mar 1945 ► Fought to secure Airfields to support the bombing of Japan ► 20,703 of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers were killed in the battle ► 6,825 KIA for the US forces. 1/3 of all Marine dead in WWII killed at Iwo Jima

Island hopping: Invasion of Okinawa- April –June 1945 ► Okinawa would have been used as a staging center for the invasion of Japan ► Kamikaze attacks on the supporting Naval forces ► Japanese fiercely defend the Island (to a suicidal level)

The Atomic Bombs ► August 6, 1945 the B- 29 Enola Gay dropped “Little Boy” on Hiroshima ► 70,000 killed ► August 9 th B-29 Bockscar dropped “Fat Man” on Nagasaki ► 40,000-75,000 killed
