1 The Proclamation of 1763 After colonists fought along side British in the French & Indian War, King George decided that colonists could not settle past the Appalachian Mts (even though the colonists had helped the British secure that land from the French)

2 The Stamp Act The British had debt from an expensive war. It’s tough maintaining a power kingdom! Beginning in the mid 1760s, they began to levy new taxes against the colonies. The Stamp Act taxed everyday items such as newspapers and playing cards. The problem? The colonists don’t have a representative in Parliament. They cannot express any disapproval of new taxes.

3 The Quartering Act--1765 As a result of the French & Indian War, many British troops were stationed in the colonies. British Parliament passed a law saying that local American governments (towns, villages) must provide accommodations (quarters) for these British troops. At times, troops had to stay in colonists’ private homes!

4 The Boston Massacre As the colonists got more rowdy, more and more British soldiers were set to the colonies. In March of 1770, a group of angry colonist began to “harass” British soldiers standing guard at an official British building in Boston, Mass. One thing leads to a another, and the British soldiers end-up firing upon the angry mob of colonist. One man dies.

5 The Tea Act In 1773, England passed the “Tea Act” which creates a monopoly on tea. The price of tea actually goes DOWN, however… The colonists want consumer freedom (choice) in the matter, so they respond with

6 The Intolerable Acts As tension increases between the British and the colonists, the British decide to “crack down” and issue the Coercive Acts (or Intolerable Acts). The Acts do the following: 1. Close the port of Boston (to trade) 2. Take-away colonial elected governor of Massachusetts and install a British governor 3. Allow trials of royal officials (like those charged in the Boston Massacre) to take place OUTSIDE of Mass. 4. A new (second) Quartering Act
