1 Empire! The First Emperors
Agenda Second Triumvirate - review Augustus Pax Romana

2 The Second Triumvirate
Who? Events?

3 The First Emperor Who? How did he avoid Julius Caesar’s fate? Titles?
Accomplishments?

4 Augustus- the first Emperor
31 BCE. to 14 CE. Senate votes to change Octavian’s name to “Augustus” (great one) He called himself “princep” (first citizen)- but Senate called him “imperator” (commander) which evolved into “Emperor” First focus was expansion: new land = new wealth. Expanded in all directions

5 The Empire under Augustus

6 Pax Romana What is it? Why is it called the Pax Romana?
Who are the Main Characters? 4 Groups of Emperors

7 The Pax Romana Empire was becoming overstretched. Augustus declared a period of “Roman Peace” 27 BCE -180 CE - there will be no large scale wars- the longest period of peace for one civilization EVER. Not a complete stop- still added bits here and there (like England) Important because it allows them to focus on organizing and developing INSIDE the empire. Golden age of Roman civilization

8 Other Emperors To Honor Julius- all Emperors take the title “Caesar” First few are from bloodline of Julius/Augustus’ - (Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero) but that didn’t work well No rules to who can become emperor. Current emperor can name ANYONE as his successor. Five Good emperors 96 CE -180 CE (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antonius Pius, Marcus Aurelius) are considered to be the best.

9 Other Emperors of Caesar’s line

10 The five good emperors
