The Rise of Computer Technology By Bharat Bhatia.

While many people associate Africa with poverty, some African nations are experiencing growth. Increased information technology occurs in some of these countries. When Americans and Europeans see news about Africa, it often deals with poverty and warfare. Very few Westerners are familiar with changes such as the increased use of computers in some African nations. These changes are occurring along with increased political freedom and economic growth. Two African countries experiencing such changes are Rwanda and South Africa.

Computers in Africa - Digital Opportunity Many people are aware of the 1994 Rwanda genocide that killed over 800,000 people. After the genocide, a new leader named Paul Kagame took power. One of Kagame's campaigns is to spread fiber optical cables throughout Rwanda to provide internet. While still experiencing poverty, Rwanda has seen a reduction in government corruption, especially in the capital city of Kigali, under the Kagame administration.

 Computers and Education  South Africa is another African nation that has seen a growth in computer technology. Schools are the main beneficiaries of computer technology in South Africa. South African business tycoon Mark runs a Linux-based company named Canonical, but he uses much of the proceeds to fund his charitable foundation. The project is program within the Foundation that deals with schools. Over time, spun-off into a self-sustaining business named Inkululeko Technologies that makes a profit. However, the company also raises money to provide free computer technology to schools in particularly poor areas. More information about Inkululeko Technologies can be found at inkululeko.co.za/inkululeko.co.za/

Africa's Contribution to Global Technology One technological contribution from South Africa is Ubuntu, the most widely used distribution of the Linux operating system. South Africa is both the birthplace and headquarters of Ubuntu. Many Americans and Europeans are choosing to install the system on their computers due to its higher level of security and lower level of malware than Microsoft Windows. Hewlett Packard, Dell, ASUS, and Acer are even selling computers with Ubuntu pre-installed.
