Symbolism Derived from Greek word meaning “to throw together.” Creates direct meaningful equation between (1) a specific object, setting, scene, character, or action and (2) ideas, values, persons, or ways of life. A substitute for the element being signified, much as the flag stands for the ideals of the nation.

Kinds of Symbols Cultural: widely recognized within a given culture. Contextual: having specific symbolic value and meaning only in individual works.

Directions Form groups What possible symbols exist in “Masque”? What do they possibly symbolize? The more detailed you notes, the better position you will be in for your one- paragraph essay.
