ACT VI: Reconstruction Comes to an End Ashes, ashes, we all fall down. …help

Panic of 1873 Economic depression occurred in 1873. North focused on economic well-being instead of Reconstruction efforts.

Effect of Supreme Court Decisions 1873: Supreme Court said 14 th amendment only protected national citizenship rights, such as interstate travel and federal protection abroad—not state citizenship rights (which was everything else). 1876: Supreme Court said federal gov’t could not punish whites that oppressed blacks. 1876: Supreme Court said 15 th amendment did not guarantee voting rights to African-Americans—simply said that voting couldn’t be denied based on race. Supreme Court interpreted laws in ways that took away civil rights.

Election of 1876 Hayes and Tilden tied w/electoral college votes. Democrats agreed to make Hayes president if troops were withdrawn from the South. They agreed. Reconstruction ended.

Reconstruction Is Over Now… The South returns to “Home Rule”. Passed laws restricting freedom of Blacks. Eliminated social programs and public schools. Reinstated segregation. Began lynching. –Fictitious charges of rape or other crimes –“Demanding respect” –“Being obnoxious” –“Eyeing” a White woman

And thus ends the era known as Reconstruction.

Um, what a messed up world. Yeah. I’m not really in the mood to brag about my learning. Let’s go. Yeah. I’m not really in the mood to brag about my learning. Let’s go. I can evaluate the impact that the Supreme Court had on Reconstruction. I can examine the way in which the Panic of 1873 had an effect on Reconstruction. I can evaluate the impact that the election of 1876 had on Reconstruction and the changes in society that followed. I can describe changes in society in the South during “home rule.” I can draw conclusions about the changes in society based on the photographs of lynchings from 1877 through the 1930s.
