Functions of Skeletal System
1. Hemopoiesis – formation of red blood cells in the diphysis of the long bones. Mineral storage- Calcium, phosphorus, vit.d Movement-with help from the use of our muscle. Protection-of internal organs. Support-framework for our body. 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
3
TYPES OF MOVEMENT Types of movement
1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system

DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Arthritis= arthr/o -joint itis - inflammation Two kinds of Arthritis: 1. Osteoarthritis 2. Rheumatoid Arthritis 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
5
DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Arthritis Osteoarthritis Caused by aging, trauma, obesity, family history Bone hits bone Symptoms: painful joints, swelling, deformity of the joint. Treatments: rest, exercise, anti-inflammatory, surgery 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
6
DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis Caused by auto-immune response. Mostly hands and feet. Symptoms: stiffness, swelling, deformities. Treatment: Aspirin(ASA), rest, ROM 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
7
DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Gout Metabolic disorder caused by overproduction of uric acid. Over ingestion of proteins/obesity Painful/swelling in joint of large toe. Treatment: Dietary restrictions on proteins, medications. 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
8
DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Osteoporosis Caused by a metabolic disorder. Low calcium intake Mostly women Decreased bone density Treatment: Early prevention, reg exercise, supplements 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
9
Disorders of the Skeletal System
Osteoporosis 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
10
DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Rickets Pediatric condition(third world countries) Lack of vitamin D Deformed, weak legs, bowing Treatment: Dietary increase of Vit.D, sunlight 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
11
DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Abnormal spinal curvatures Kyphosis Lordosis Scoliosis hunchback swayback s-curve 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
12
SKELETAL SYSTEM TRAUMA
DISLOCATION VS. SUBLUXATION Subluxation occurs when the joint only comes out of place partially and goes back into place. move the affected area to move it back into place. This is less traumatic and lower in severity than a dislocation. Dislocation happens when ball portion of the joint comes out completely from its socket. Usually requires surgery. This is more severe, more painful and requires more treatment than a subluxation. 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
13
Skeletal System Trauma
Fractures- broken bones 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
14
Skeletal System Trauma
How is a fracture treated? cast/immobilizer/traction/ surgery 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
15
SKELETAL SYSTEM TRAUMA
Fractures Closed or simple does NOT break the skin 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
16
SKELETAL SYSTEM TRAUMA
Fractures Open or compound DOES break through the skin……. Increase risk of infection 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
17
SKELETAL SYSTEM TRAUMA
Fractures Comminuted- fragmented, shattered, pieces of bone Gunshot, crushing injury 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
18
SKELETAL SYSTEM TRAUMA
Fractures Greenstick- CHILDREN incomplete break splintering 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
19
SKELETAL SYSTEM TRAUMA
A sprain is an injury to a ligament, the tough, fibrous tissue that connects bones to other bone. Ligament injuries involve a stretching or a tearing of this tissue. A strain, on the other hand, is an injury to either a muscle or a tendon, the tissue that connects muscles to bones. Depending on the severity of the injury, a strain may be a simple overstretch of the muscle or tendon, or it can result in a partial or complete tear. 1.03 Understand the functions and disorders of the skeletal system
