Submission & Sanctification in Suffering (1 Peter 2:24-25) Jesus bore our sins on the cross so that we, having died to sin might live for righteousness (Romans 6:6-11; Col. 3:9-10; Eph. 4:22-24) Although we were like sheep going astray, we have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls!

1 Peter 2:22-25 & Isaiah 53:3-11 1 Peter 2:23-25 “…who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness by whose stripes you were healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. Isaiah 53:5-11 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth… For the transgressions of My people He was stricken…. My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.

The Epistles of Peter & Jude Lesson 6: A Life of Submission is a Blessed Life (1 Peter 3:1-12) “…knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing” -- 1 Peter 3:9

The Submission of Wives to Husbands (1 Peter 3:1-6) Wives are to submit to their husbands (3:1-2) –To subordinate themselves AND obey –This same command was given to citizens and servants (2:13, 18). The benefit of a wife’s submission may be the salvation of a husband (1 Corinthians 7:16) –Some husbands may not obey the word (cf. 2:8) –But they may be won “without a word” by the conduct of their wives. –Husbands need to observe in their wives behavior that is chaste and respectful (Eph. 5:33b) Chaste behavior is clean, pure from carnality & modest

The Submission of Wives to Husbands (1 Peter 3:1-6) The adornment of the wife (3:3-6) Should not be merely outward (cf. 1 Tim. 2:9) –The “not…but” grammatical construction indicates priority rather than prohibition (cf. John 6:27) Should focus on the inward, “hidden person.” –Incorruptible beauty –A gentle and quiet spirit –Being submissive/obedient to their own husbands Like holy women in former times who trusted God. Sarah called Abraham Lord. (Genesis 18:12) –Women who do good, not out of fear, but because they trust God, are daughters of Sarah.

The Obligations of Husbands (1 Peter 3:7) Husbands are to… Dwell with their wives with understanding –Not with bitterness! (Colossians 3:19) Give honor to the wife… –As to the weaker vessel (cf. Eph. 5:25) –As being heirs together of the grace of life. (Galatians 3:28-29) –So that your prayers may not be hindered. Prayer can be hindered by many things (3:12), such as bitterness, an unforgiving spirit, bickering, jealousy, irritability, uncontrolled temper and unkind words. These things hinder all spirituality, because they are not done in love (see 1 Corinthians 13:1-8)

The Quality of a Submissive Life (1 Peter 3:8-12) Qualities of a life of submission (3:8-9) –Unity: “all of you be of one mind” (Romans 12:16; Philippians 2:2-4) –Compassion (lit. sympathy) for one another (Romans 12:15; 1 Corinthians 12:26) –Brotherly love (Gr. philadelphos) –Tenderhearted (strong feelings for) –Courtesy –Returning good for evil (Romans 12:17-21) “Knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.”

The Blessedness of a Submissive Life (1 Peter 3:10-12) Peter supports the claim that those who live a submissive life will “inherit a blessing” by quoting Psalm 34:12-16 To love life and see good days one must… –Refrain from speaking evil and deceit. –Turn away from evil and do good. –Seek peace and pursue it. (Hebrews 12:14 ) The Lord attends to & blesses such a life! –The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous –His ears are open to their prayers –The face of the lord is against those who do evil (Proverbs 28:9).
