What is a computer virus? A computer virus is a software program that is designed to destroy files and/or mess up the operations of a computer system.

Types of Viruses File Viruses/Parasitic Viruses- attaches and destroys files Boot Sector Virus- infects the boot sector of a computer Multipartite Viruses- works like file and boot sector virus Macro Viruses- attacks programs that use macros Network Viruses- scans and attacks defenseless computers on a shared network E-Mail Viruses- spreads by e-mailing its self to other computers

Symptoms of a virus? The computer is running slower that usual The anti-virus program has stopped working New desktop icons on the desktop that you did not make Messages pop up in the middle of the screen The computer turns off automatically on its own

How to get rid of a virus The main thing that you must do to get rid of a virus is to install an anti-virus software installed on your computer. The anti-virus will capture the virus and quarantine or remove the virus.

How to fix the damage? Some anti-virus programs like Norton have a back up file protection program that if the file is destroyed or damaged the program repairs it. Have your computer and files on a backup disc

How to avoid a virus? Have anti-virus installed on your computer Keep your anti-virus up-to-date about the latest viruses Make your anti-virus scan everyday at certain time to keep viruses away Do not open emails that are strangely titled or have unknown attachments
