1
Renewable & Non- renewable energy
2
Fossil Fuels 1.Name the main types of fossil fuels. 2.Explain briefly how they were made. 3.Why is there a problem with fossil fuels? ( 2 reasons )
3
Power Stations
4
Power stations In fossil fuel power stations the fuel is burned to produce heat This heat generates steam The steam helps spin a large turbine This spinning turbine generates electricity -However, lots of waste gases are produced -E.g. sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide -What problems do these gases cause?
5
Alternative Energy List as many kinds of renewable energy as you can. At least 4 kinds.
6
Wave Energy
7
The energy in the waves can be changed into electrical energy. It is free, clean and will not run out. Only available at certain locations. It is difficult to convert into useful energy
8
Wind Energy
9
It is free, clean and will not run out. Only suitable at certain locations. Can be noisy, and cause visual pollution. It is difficult to convert into useful energy.
10
Hydro Electric
11
As the water flows down it turns turbines Which then turn generators to make electricity. Only available at suitable locations.
12
Solar Energy
13
The suns light is changed into electrical energy. It will not run out and is free and clean. Some locations are more suitable than others. Solar panels can be very expensive
14
A clue to another kind of free energy
15
Geothermal energy Energy in the form of heat is found in some rocks. Water is pumped through the rocks to extract the heat. Only in suitable locations and it is difficult and expensive to set up
16
Nuclear Power Station Energy comes from nuclear fission. The atoms split releasing energy and 2 or more neutrons. These neutrons split other atoms and there is a chain reaction. Is non-renewable – uses radioactive metals e.g. uranium
17
Nuclear Power List advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power. Advantage: – a little fuel gives a lot of energy Disadvantages: -dangers involved with nuclear energy -problem with nuclear waste lasting a long time
18
BioFuel Plants (e.g. sugar cane) can be used to produce alcohol This alcohol (ethanol) is very flammable Can be used as a source of energy However, growing crops for fuel not food is controversial
19
Source of Energy Advantages Disadvantages 1.Wind 2.Wave 3.Solar 4.Tidal 5.Geothermal 6.Hydroelectric 7.Nuclear 8.Fossil Fuels 9. BioFuels
